Potentia Monism

A new ontological framework in which neither Mind nor Matter is fundamental — and consciousness is the mechanism through which possibility becomes reality.

The Core Thesis

Potentia Monism (PM) proposes that the true fundamental reality is neither Mind nor Matter — both are manifestations of an underlying field: an infinite continuum of possibilities we call the Potentia field.

We, as humans, continuously experience sequences of states of the Potentia field through our consciousness. In each moment, we make atomic — that is, binary and indivisible — decisions to manifest another state for the next moment. The receptive field of possible next states is visible based on its associations with the current state, of both Mind and Matter.

The principle of Decision versus Choice: our selection of the next state not only moves us to that state, but also unfolds the potential future field of possibilities.

Universally Harmonious Decisions — The Truth

From this ontology, PM defines truth as the path of experienced states of the Potentia field, via one's consciousness, that does not contradict with other consciousnesses. We call decisions without conflicts Universally Harmonious Decisions. The Truth, in this framework, is the path of experiences formed by such harmonious decisions through one's consciousness.

From PM to AI Architecture

The Potentia Monism framework suggests six architectural departures from conventional large language models:

PrincipleLLMs (conventional)PM-based AI
State-Field ModelingLinear, discrete token sequencesState topology; non-linear manifold
Decision-Centric ArchitecturePrediction-centric; static weightsDynamic manifolds; decision at each step
Harmony-Based OptimizationInconsistent outputs; optimizes likelihoodPenalizes contradictions; aligns across perspectives
Bidirectional CouplingStateless across sessions; no environment couplingEvolves through decisions; possibility landscape reshaped by interaction
Receptive Field of PossibilityUnconstrained next-token generationReduces spurious jumps; improves narrative continuity
Binary Decision UnitsDrifting probabilities; opaque reasoningMore interpretable reasoning; clearer causal paths

Significance

Potentia Monism offers a philosophical foundation that unifies mystical intuitions about the nature of reality with a formal framework compatible with modern cognitive science and AI research. It provides a coherent ontology from which the other Synaptosearch research projects — RCM, IBS, language modeling, InnerMatch — can draw shared principles.

The framework is currently in active philosophical development. We welcome engagement from philosophers, cognitive scientists, and AI researchers interested in ontological foundations for next-generation AI systems.
